Distance Traveled
|
Speed of TravelBefore the building of railroads, the speed of a horse was basically the max speed of land travel. Traveling from Boston to New York City by wagon would take 5 days if conditions were good. Another method of transportation were canal boats. They were previously the fastest way of transportation, traveling at five to six miles per hour. The railroads put them out of business traveling at five to six times as fast. This improved many aspects of trade. It enabled more shipments to be shipped and thus increasing imports and exports. This increase in products allowed them to be sold for cheaper, and overall improving trade.
